Liga Mexicana Elite de Hockey, the hockey league featuring the greatest hockey logos in the world, kicked off its season this past weekend with a pair of games that saw the Olmec Stone Heads and Teotihucan Priests each pick up two-goal victories.
The Stone Heads took on the Aztec Eagle Warriors and picked up a 4-2 victory behind the play of Hector Majul, who I assume is the Wayne Gretzkey of Mexican hockey, and his four goals. Majul was the only Stone Heads player to register more than one point in the win. The Eagle Warriors received goals from Oscar Flores and Fabian Alva, while Hernando Chavez had two assists, putting him second in the league in scoring. The stone heads out-shot the Eagle Warriors, 30-15.
In the weekend’s other game, the Priests took down the Mayan Astronomers by a score of 3-1. Enrique Samperio, Christian Bachman, and Andrew Mata scored the goals in the win, while Jorge Perez had the lone goal for the Astronomers. The Priests out-shot the Astronomers by a 39-18 margin.
The league is off until November 12 when the Astronomers and Eagle Warriors face-off in a game with each team looking for their first win, while the nightcap will be a highly-anticipated showdown between the two undefeated teams, the Stone Heads and the Priests.
