Yahoo Sports announces it will no longer offer fantasy golf

With the start of a new PGA Tour just around the corner, golf fans received a big blow last night via an email, with Yahoo Sports announcing that it will no longer be hosting fantasy golf.

It’s a rough break for rich white men who wanted the fantasy of owning and controlling other rich white men. The first major defeat for rich white folks in this country since 45 took office, if you think about it.

The email reads as follows:

Dear Yahoo Sports Fantasy Golf user,

We wanted to let you know that Yahoo Sports Fantasy Golf has been discontinued and will no longer be available for the upcoming golf season. Your golf historical standings will still be viewable in your profile.

As we continue to innovate and grow Yahoo Fantasy Sports, part of that is consolidation of some of our offerings. If you would like to continue playing fantasy golf, we recommend the PGA Tour Fantasy Golf game at https://fantasygolf.pgatour.com/

We thank you for being a fan and loyal user, and we hope that you continue to enjoy the rest of Yahoo Fantasy Sports games.

Sincerely,
Yahoo Fantasy Sports Team

The email goes into no specifics, but given how the game of golf has been as a whole, lagging interest at actual course, dropping TV numbers, I would venture that it wasn’t worth the cost and time it took to host fantasy golf, for a very small number of players, compared to say fantasy football, basketball, and others.

It also leaves fantasy golf fans with very few options for the 2018 season, as many other sites have dropped fantasy golf over the years. ESPN no longer hosts it, and a couple of years back dropped it’s popular Best Ball game, that was only available for the major tournaments of the year. The email above directs players to use the PGA Tour’s official site and fantasy game if players are looking to fill that void.

Aside from the PGA Tour’s official game, the only other place I can think of that offers fantasy golf is Draft Kings, where they have a game similar to ESPN’s Best Ball game, but it costs money because Draft Kings is gambling.

So yeah, if you’re into fantasy golf, rough break, but there are still other options out there.
